How to Begin Training Aikido

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few.” — Shunryu Suzuki

We welcome beginners and visitors at any time. Stop by to watch a class and learn more about ongoing registration in our Adult, Teen, and Kids Programs. No experience is necessary to start training at Tacoma Aikikai. We welcome students of all ages, abilities, genders, backgrounds, and experiences. The desire to practice the dynamic martial art of Aikido is all you need to begin.

1. Visit

New and beginning students are asked to visit the dojo. Watch a class and talk to us to learn more about Aikido training and the dojo. Email us to schedule your visit or stop by during our normal class schedule.

If you’re transferring from another dojo, you’re welcome to join us on the mat

Twice a year, new and prospective students can take part in our 6-week Beginner’s Series that covers the basics of practice. The Beginner’s Series is not required for starting, and if you are ready to train, we encourage you to join the dojo. Now is always the best time to get started!

Email or Call Us with questions any time and stay in touch by signing up for our mailing list.

2. Register

After visiting the dojo, fill out your membership registration, liability wavier forms, and EFT automatic payment forms at the dojo or online. If you would like to apply for sliding scale or scholarship rates, please contact us prior to registration.

Because learning a martial art takes time and investment, new students are asked to commit to three months of training upon initial registration. Uniforms are optional during this time but can be purchased for $50 in the dojo. After your first 3 months, we don’t have contracts, but we do ask that you communicate with us for any change in membership status.

3. Train

Get on the mat and train!

Arrive early for your first class to get oriented. Read our Beginner’s Handbook to learn more about training.

Kids and Teens can attend unlimited classes in each age group.

Beginning Adult Students can attend unlimited Beginner or All Levels classes. In your first few sessions, the instructor or a ranking student will work with you individually to help you learn to fall safely. After that, mixed levels train together, and individual instruction is geared for each student.

While there is no limit to how much you can train, we ask that students commit to a minimum of two days a week.

Tacoma Aikikai is dedicated to sharing Aikido with the community. Sliding scale rates and scholarships are available. Please ask if you need it!

How Membership Works

Membership is easy. Monthly dues support the dojo and offer access to all program-specific classes (kids, teens, or adults).

Monthly membership payments are not payment for classes. Members dues, time, and energy on the mat all support the dojo community so that we can continue to train together. Payments and are due by the 10th of each month unless other arrangements are made. No one is turned away for lack of funds. Please contact us for sliding scale rates or scholarships.

Email us or stop by the dojo to watch your first and get started.
